ACTIVE TRAVEL
The commute to and from school is an ideal opportunity to encourage children to be active. This could include walking, jogging, scooting and riding bikes. Schools can play a key role in promoting and organising schemes to inspire children and families to be active while commuting.
Sustrans have produced a PDF that sets out the benefits of active travel. Their website also provides further ideas, inspiration and programmes you can get involved in as a school.
The British Heart Foundation have produced a pack for primary schools to promote active travel. It includes ideas for promoting walking to school and motivating young people to walk to school. Download the pack here.
Bikeability is today’s cycle training programme. It’s like cycling proficiency, but better! It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling. Visit the Bikeability website to find out more.
