ACTIVE PLAYGROUND

Active playground programmes are run outside on the school playground during break and lunchtime to keep children active during these times. Active playgrounds can include Sports Leaders delivering fun games and activities or new playground markings and equipment to allow children to create their own physically active games. BOX / SKIP 2B FIT

Box 2 B Fit and Skip 2 B Fit are exercise programmes for primary-age children which provide short bursts of boxing or skipping related fitness activities and can be delivered in 30 minute sessions as either lunchtime, after school or curricular PE lessons. This is a programme that can be implemented into a school day and uses skipping and boxing.

CHANGE 4 LIFE

Change4Life Sports Clubs aim to encourage less active children to take part in more physical activity and to engage more in school life. The clubs develop fundamental movement skills and capture the essence of sport without directly delivering sport-specific content.

They are grouped under five multi-sport themes; adventure, creative, combat, flight and target.

DAILY MILE

The daily mile initiative takes place over just 15 minutes during the school day, with children averaging a mile each day. Children run outside in the fresh air, there’s no set up, tidy up or equipment required, no training is needed for teachers and the children run in their uniforms so no kit or changing time is needed.

FIT FOR LIFE

Fit for Life is a programme created by the Sedgefield School Sport Partnership, it is a functional fitness programme providing a daily 10 minute workout.

The workouts aim to have the children working at a moderate to vigorous intensity to ensure maximum benefit. The resource includes online training, movement videos and workout videos.

FOREST SCHOOLS

Forest schools programmes are an innovative educational approach to outdoor play and learning. By participating in engaging, motivating and achievable tasks and activities in a woodland environment, each child has an opportunity to develop intrinsic motivation, emotional and social skills as well as being physically active throughout the activities and tasks.

HEALTHY MOVERS

Healthy Movers is a suite of resources and training to support practitioners and families to develop the competence and confidence to ensure every child is physically literate.

The practitioner resource develops the confidence to ensure every child is physically literate and deliver the physical development component of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework. It enables settings to incorporate physical activity into every day and engage parents on the importance of healthy active lifestyles and their contribution to a child’s development.

INTRA SCHOOL COMPETITION

Intra school competitions involve pupils within the school competing against each other in various sports and physical activities. Pupils can compete in specific sports competitions as well as various types of physical activities.

The Your School Games website provides a variety of resources for schools to help them plan and deliver intra school competition as part of their School Games offer.

Durham City and CLS SSP has produced a resource that gives a template for schools to deliver an intra school competition on their school site. Schools can compete virtually against other schools by comparing their scores on the events.

OPAL

The Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) Primary Programme is a mentor supported school improvement programme. OPAL supports schools in developing a cultural shift in thinking about and supporting children’s play.

Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) is a community interest (CIC) company dedicated to providing services to schools and organisations in England and Wales to improve the quality of play opportunities for all children. OPAL staff have expertise in teaching, school improvement, landscape design, project management, play and strategic planning.

The OPAL Primary Programme offers schools a structured process, with mentored support provided for up to two years and many resources, to enable schools to permanently change both their environment and their culture to enable provision of amazing playtimes every day.

Schools and parents / carers have a role to play in supporting children to move more throughout each day. The UK Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines provide recommendations on the frequency, intensity, duration and types of physical activity at different life stages, from early to later years.

The Government Childhood Obesity Plan has set out the ambition for all children to achieve 60 minutes of physical activity every day, with schools being responsible for delivering 30 of these active minutes. The Active 30 Durham Campaign aims to help schools in County Durham support every pupil to participate in 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity activity every day at school
