LIVIN & WELLBEING FOR LIFE: CHAIR-BASED EXERCISE

Livin are an award-winning not for profit housing association based in County Durham. They help to improve the lives of the people living in their homes and in their places. They work hard to make sure those homes are high-quality, sustainable, and adaptable. They also offer support to help people into work and training to increase their financial confidence and stability.

Livin have participated in some fantastic partnership working through the Active Shildon pilot. Earlier this year, they ran chair-based exercise sessions in their Shildon Communal Lounges with Lauren Copping, Wellbeing Practitioner at Wellbeing for Life.

Annie Pluse, the Community Facilities Coordinator at Livin told us,We began to offer gentle exercise in our Communal Lounges because our residents said they would quite like to attend a social group with an element of physical activity.”

“Livin felt that by offering this type of activity in our Community Spaces, our vulnerable residents would feel more included, confident, and generally better having attended some type of physical activity programme. Following on from Covid and knowing the impact social isolation has affected our residents, we wanted to encourage them to re-connect.”

Sessions held in West Close Communal Lounge in Shildon were particularly successful. 10 participants attended the full 8 weeks and the feedback was very positive. Participants enjoyed their time there, often laughing and giggling together. Songs were requested by the group in advance, which allowed Lauren to prepare sessions. The participants enjoyed reminiscing to their favourite songs, often telling stories from memories that the music related to. The sessions were loved by residents. One participant said, “Lauren is really good, I really enjoy the group. I have fun and it helps me communicate with others as I would normally be sat at home.”

Overall, the group was a wonderful opportunity for the participants to socialise and chat with friends. It was also something that Lauren thoroughly enjoyed delivering and attending. She would look forward to seeing them every week. This event was uplifting in all aspects!

Due to the success of these sessions and the great benefits to participants, there are plans for Livin and Wellbeing for Life to work together to deliver them again in the future!
