Why is Safeguarding Adults in Sport Important?

by | Aug 28, 2024 | News

Safeguarding adults in sport is complex due to the fact that all adults, including adults at risk, have a right to make their own decisions, however unwise these may be, including the choice not to act to protect themselves. Many people don’t understand why adults need safeguarding. Separate policies and procedures help people to understand why and how to safeguard adults. The Ann Craft Trust are leading the way with supporting clubs and communities to learn more about safeguarding adults in sport.

Safeguarding adults is very different to safeguarding children – the legislation and guidance are separate, and this means it is vital for us to equip ourselves with the knowledge needed to support adults within our clubs and communities. Adults are able to make their own decisions and determine their own destinies and we often feel that we do not have the right to be concerned or speak up when we see something not quite right.

Sports clubs play a vital role in supporting and identifying members of their community who may need additional support – accessing safeguarding adult training will support clubs to identify the signs that someone may need help and also what to do to support them in the right way.

Any adult, at any point in their lives, can become vulnerable. Having the right adult safeguarding knowledge and training could not only protect and safeguard them from harm but could also keep them engaged with the club and activity provided.

Safeguarding adults is a responsibility for every sport and physical activity organisation, in getting safeguarding right, your club will help to provide safe access for every participant. We know that being active has a positive impact on both physical health and mental health and wellbeing, working together we can make sure that everyone has access to a safe, inclusive environment to enjoy their activity.
